Troubleshooting a 503 Service Unavailable Error When Accessing the Student Portal

Some students may receive a 503 Service Unavailable error when accessing certain links within the Passport Portal while using a public Wi-Fi network, such as those at a public library, coffee shop, hotel, or business.

In most cases, this issue is not caused by your account or the college's systems. It is often related to security restrictions on the network you are using.

Why This Happens

Many public and business networks use firewalls or web filtering to protect their users. These security settings can sometimes block or interfere with connections to secure services used by the Pasport Portal.

While you may be able to sign in to Passport and Canvas successfully, clicking certain links within the portal may result in a 503 Service Unavailable message if the network prevents access to the required services.

What You Can Do

If you receive a 503 error, try the following:

  1. Try a different network.
    • Connect to your home internet or a personal mobile hotspot if available.
    • If possible, switch from public Wi-Fi to another internet connection.
  2. Disconnect from VPN software.
    • If you are using a VPN, disconnect it and try again.
  3. Refresh the page.
    • Wait a minute and reload the page. Temporary network issues can sometimes resolve themselves.
  4. Try a different web browser.
    • If you're using one browser, try another (such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari).
  5. Clear your browser's cache and cookies.
    • Cached information can occasionally interfere with loading secure websites.
  6. Contact the network administrator.
    • If you are using a library, workplace, or other public network, ask whether their firewall or web filtering is blocking access to educational websites or secure authentication services.
